PORTS OF THE WORLD: Hai Phong, Vietnam

Hai Phong is a mid-size port, yet it experiences large volumes of through cargo traffic and business. Located right off of the South China Sea, the Port of Hai Phong can support vessels up to a maximum size of over 500 feet in length and has a channel and cargo pier depth of 21 to 25 feet deep.

The beths in port are naturally deep and are wide enough to allow ships to maneouvre in place.

Many different overseas shipping companies and vessel manufacturing companies are located in Hai Phong

The average tidal range is 2.5 metres.

Maximum size of vessel acceptable: 10,000DWT alongside wharf), 40.000 DWT at the nearby lighterage area.

Hai Phong Port manages the terminal.

Due to the tidal conditions, the terminal requires ships to specify their time of arrival (ETA). Pilotage is also compulsory.

The port supplies ordinary ships' provisions such as potable water, fuel oil, diesel, deck supplies and engine supplies.

Recently, the terminal underwent a significant recapitalization in its IT network. There are now 11 servers and 400 work-stations in port.

A Cisco network is assembled throughout the port area by cable network wireless using 54 Mbps.

The technology allows a computerised Container Terminal Management System, an extensive CCTV system, security gate management and control system and the internal document management system.
